The 40th episode of The JamBase Podcast, part of the Osiris podcast network, features a “Musical Mentors” discussion with guitarist Neal Casal as well as “The Rundown” of recent news stories. Episode 40 of The JamBase Podcast is sponsored by nugs.net and CBD Vermont.
Neal spoke with JamBase’s Andy Kahn on the Chris Robinson Brotherhood‘s tour bus at last month’s Summer Camp Music Festival. Casal recalls the role his father played in getting him his first guitar. The New Jersey native went on to discuss how his love of The Rolling Stones introduced him to that group’s influences and what he learned from Todd Youth, one of his first band mates. Neal notes his most important mentor was Davis Jaynes, who taught Casal lessons about touch and tone and saw his potential. Other mentors Casal discusses are Ricky Medlocke of Lynyrd Skynyrd fame, producer Jim Scott and the late Andy Goessling of Railroad Earth.
“The Rundown,” co-hosted by Kahn and Scott Bernstein, started on a somber note with a discussion of Jeff Austin’s passing. The pair also talked about John Mayer using the late Jerry Garcia’s Wolf guitar at a recent Dead & Company concert and the start of Stones tour. Finally, Scotty shared his experience attending Phish’s Sunday night show at Merriweather Post Pavilion.
