Nathaniel Rateliff appeared on CBS’ Sunday Morning this past weekend. The segment focused on the Denver-based musician’s hard-earned success.
The profile opens with footage from Rateliff’s annual Red Rocks performances. Playing the iconic Colorado venue is often pointed to as a sign that a musician has “made it.” “It was another one of those places that seemed like a dream if we could ever even play there,” Rateliff told CBS’ Anthony Mason. “And now, I’m not even sure how many times I’ve played there!”

But accepting success hasn’t always been easy for Rateliff. “I’m sure somewhere in there it’s because I don’t feel like I deserve it,” Rateliff said of his success. “You know, like, experiencing joy is not always easy.”
The piece also highlights Nathaniel’s friendship with longtime bass player Joseph Pope III who Rateliff moved to Denver with from his native Missouri when he was 18. Additionally, the segment spotlights Rateliff’s close relationship with producer Richard Swift, who sadly died in 2018 from complications due to alcoholism. Rateliff also spoke about his own struggles with alcohol.
“Nathaniel Rateliff is trying to live cleaner now, but keep his music on the edge,” Mason noted. Rateliff added: “With rock ‘n’ roll, it’s always best when it’s about to fall off the tracks, and you’re just like, I can’t believe that just happened. But that’s what makes it exciting, you know, when it feels like it’s about to fall apart, and it doesn’t.”
