On Wednesday, January 17 Jam Cruise sets sail from Miami aboard the Norweigan Jade. The musical adventure will feature performances from Medeski Scofield Martin & Wood, Galactic, Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe, Maceo Parker, Lettuce, Lotus, Electron, Steel Pulse, Keller Williams, Voodoo Dead, Turkuaz and many others. Also included in the lineup is troubadour Nathan Moore, who will perform a special The Whole Other set with pianist Holly Bowling and, as always, will hold down “The Spot.” Moore brings a camera with him on each Jam Cruise and has unveiled a montage from the past seven cruises which can be viewed below.
Nathan Moore established a Jam Cruise tradition in 2011 by hosting late night performances on an outdoor deck of each and every trip since Jam Cruise 9 in 2011. The area where Nathan and his musical friends perform is called “The Spot.” As noted, “The action usually starts around midnight on the second night of Jam Cruise and runs through sunrise of the following morning and then repeats each night/morning until we return to the home port.”
While most performances on Jam Cruise focus on improvisation, Nathan spotlights the power of the song. He usually brings a few talented friends from his hometown of Staunton, Virginia including his The Whole Other bandmate, bassist Lex Park. Who else joins in? That’s the beauty of “The Spot,” the lineup is never pre-determined and changes each night (this is Jam Cruise, after all). Members of Greensky Bluegrass, ALO, the Ryan Montbleau Band, The Brothers Comatose, Fruition, The Shook Twins, Zach Deputy, The Slip, Tea Leaf Green, Hot Buttered Rum, Elephant Revival and Steve Kimock are just some of those who have stopped by to sit for a spell and perform at “The Spot” over the years.
