My Morning Jacket frontman Jim James appears on the latest episode of the Song Exploder podcast in which artists breakdown the process of composing and recording a song. James takes a detailed look at “Spring (Among the Living)” a song featured on the band’s upcoming seventh album, The Waterfall, that features Merrill Garbus (t-U-n-e-Y-a-R-d-S), Kyleen King (Swansea) and Patti King on vocals. Kyleen and Patti also added strings to the track.

James and his bandmates were also featured in a recent Rolling Stone profile that focused primarily on The Waterfall which will be released May 4 via ATO Records/Capitol Records. However, the article also touched on the 2013 AmericanaramA that saw MMJ supporting headliner Bob Dylan with Wilco, Richard Thompson, Ryan Bingham and Bob Weir on select dates. While James had previously shared that he never spoke to Dylan during the tour, guitarist Carl Broemel expanded on the lack of collaborations during the tour, telling Rolling Stone, “It was pitched to us like, ‘There are gonna be lots of collaborations, and Bob wants to play with you guys.’? That didn’t happen.” With respect to linking up with Grateful Dead guitarist Bob Weir, James told the magazine, “He was so open to talking, the kind of things we were hoping Dylan would be. Having him there was like this great gift.” Weir added, “I had a lot of fun playing with those guys. They’re a very, very good band.”
