My Morning Jacket Kicks Off US Tour 2022 In Memphis

My Morning Jacket began the spring leg of their U.S. Tour 2022 with a concert in Memphis on Tuesday. The quintet treated fans at the Orpheum Theatre to a 19-song performance featuring a career-spanning setlist to get the trek underway.

Guitarists Jim James and Carl Broemel, keyboardist Bo Koster, bassist Tom Blankenship and drummer Patrick Hallahan opened with “Love Love Love” off their 2021 self-titled LP last night. My Morning Jacket was also represented in Memphis with performances of “In Color” and “Regularly Scheduled Programming.”

The band followed “Love Love Love” with Evil Urges chestnut “Touch Me I’m Going To Scream Pt. 1” and played “Pt. 2” to end the main set. Next up was the title track from 2011’s Circuital and a fairly concise “Magheetah.” The biggest surprise came a few songs later when My Morning Jacket tacked on a medley to “Wonderful (The Way I Feel)” that included jams on Bobby “Blue” Bland’s “Ain’t No Love In The Heart Of The City,” Elvis Presley-popularized tunes “That’s Alright Mama” and “Blue Moon Of Kentucky” and the Jerry Lee Lewis-popularized “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Going On.” Bobby “Blue” Bland, Elvis Presley and Jerry Lee Lewis are each associated with Memphis.

The highly unusual “Wonderful” led into the aforementioned “In Color.” Additional songs played by MMJ during their main set included “Wasted,” “Dondante,” “Off The Record” and a “Wordless Chorus” that ended with a stellar solo from Jim James and assist from Carl Broemel. The group returned to the stage to end the evening with a three-song encore consisting of live staples “Victory Dance,” “Dancefloors” and “One Big Holiday.”
