Now that the Grateful Dead documentary Long Strange Trip is finally out, will Deadheads take over Broadway next? Broadway World reports a new musical is in the works featuring the music of the Grateful Dead. Dead & Company keyboardist Jeff Chimenti is attached as Music Director.
A casting notice was recently posted with a brief description of the project, “The currently untitled new musical comedy, featuring the music of THE GRATEFUL DEAD, is a semi-fantastical and immersive Americana tale of the Jones family in 1920’s Cumberland, Maryland, as they con, swindle and gamble their way into riches.” Auditions will be held on June 16 with readings scheduled for July.
Back in 1998, a musical called Cumberland Blues featuring music from Robert Hunter and Jerry Garcia closed after less than a week of performances in San Francisco as per Playbill.
