Brooklyn Comes Alive :: 10.22.16 :: Multiple Venues :: Brooklyn, NY

The one-day music festival Brooklyn Comes Alive returned to New York City for its second installment this past Saturday featuring a bevy of one-time-only and rare collaborations. Organizers hosted over 50 musicians at three venues in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Williamsburg, each within walking distance. The action started a little after noon and went well into the late night hours.

Brooklyn Comes Alive ’16 started with a set from pianist Holly Bowling at The Hall at MP, which featured her usual mix of Grateful Dead and Phish classics. Up-and-comers Organ Freeman gave a performance that led into a set from Tim Palmieri & Friends that saw the Kung Fu guitarist and his group of Connecticut-based musicians present a diverse batch of covers including Funkadelic’s “Can You Get To That,” Cheech & Chong’s “Earache My Eye” and “Everybody’s Everything” by Santana. The late afternoon saw performances from a supergroup of DJ Logic, Scotty Zwang, Steve Molitz and Luke Bemand at the Music Hall Of Williamsburg, Electric Beethoven featuring special guests Aron Magner and Skerik at The Hall At MP, a DJ set from Disco Biscuits’ bassist Marc Brownstein at the Music Hall Of Williamsburg and a set from Boston pop-funk band Ripe at Brooklyn Bowl that included a guest spot from Courtney J’Mell Smith of The Nth Power.

The packed day of music continued with a tribute to influential hip hop artist J Dilla at the Music Hall Of Williamsburg put together by Break Science at the Music Hall Of Williamsburg, while The All Brothers Band of Oteil Burbridge, Kofi Burbridge, Neal Evans and Adam Evans made their debut at The Hall At MP. As the sun set and the evening began Brooklyn Bowl hosted the lineup of Scott Metzger, Joe Russo, Robert Walter and Andy Hess for a performance that included songs from Metzger’s WOLF! project and Walter’s originals along with covers of The Meters, The Beatles, Ike Turner and more. Brasstacks held court at the Music Hall Of Williamsburg, while The Hall At MP hosted a set from Lettuce family members The Coomes Brothers featuring The Shady Horns.

One of the more highly anticipated sets of the event came from Breaking Biscuits which saw Break Science come together with Marc Brownstein and Aron Magner of the Disco Biscuits at Music Hall Of Williamsburg. The foursome presented a performance, which can be streamed below, that included a take on Daft Punk’s “Robot Rock.” Over at Brooklyn Bowl The Nth Power wowed with a set of Earth Wind & Fire covers featuring special guests the Burbridge brothers, Skerik, Natalie Cressman, Eric “Benny” Bloom, Ryan Zoidis and Farnell Newton. Young axeslinger Brandon “Taz” Niederauer contributed to “Serpentine Fire.” Over at The Hall At MP sacred steel specialist Roosevelt Collier threw down with a lineup that saw him joined by Michael League, Rob Compa, Eli Winderman and Adrian Tramontano on a set that included covers of “Foxy Lady” and “Weird Fishes/Arpeggi.”

The Music Hall Of Williamsburg hosted late night sets from Manic Focus & Friends and Horizon Wireless Live, while the action at Brooklyn Bowl concluded with a mesmerizing set of improv from DRKWAV featuring Adam Deitch, John Medeski and Skerik. Over at The Hall At MP, SCI percussionist Jason Hann gave Northeasterners a rare taste of Rhythmatronix as he was joined by Oteil Burbridge, Todd Stoops, Fareed Haque and Raul Pineda with guest spots from Kofi Burbridge and Elise Testone thrown in for good measure.
