Mumford & Sons Open For Themselves With Cover-Filled Set In Phoenix

Mumford & Sons donned costumes and performed a set of covers under the moniker “The Sun Never Sets On The Cool Kids” on Monday night in Phoenix as their own opening act. The fun performance at Talking Stick Resort Arena came after the scheduled opener, Gang Of Youths, canceled due to illness.
The members of Mumford & Sons emerged at the start of the night dressed in various costumes including frontman Marcus Mumford, who looked as if he came straight from a hair metal video shoot. Winston Marshall led The Sun Never Sets On The Cool Kids through a cover of AC/DC’s “You Shook Me All Night Long” before Marcus belted out The Kinks’ “You Really Got Me.” Next up were takes on “Wagon Wheel” and “The Weight” ahead of a raucous rendition of Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.” The first, and perhaps last, The Sun Never Sets On The Cool Kids set came to a close with a performance of the Bruce Springsteen classic “Atlantic City.” Mumford & Sons had played each of the songs previously besides “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun.”

Mumford & Sons returned without costumes for their main set. The Brits focused on material from their most recent album, Delta and also worked in such classics as “Little Lion Man,” “Babel” and “The Cave.” For the encore, the members of the group gathered around a single mic for unplugged versions of their own “Where Are You Now?” and Simon & Garfunkel’s “The Boxer.” Mumford & Sons then concluded the night with a run of “Awake My Soul,” “Woman,” “I Will Wait” and “Delta.”
