My Morning Jacket: Taping For Television

By Andy Kahn May 29, 2016 7:57 am PDT

Days ago, My Morning Jacket released a remastered and expanded edition of their 2003 breakthrough LP It Still Moves. One of my first exposures to MMJ was during their appearance as musical guests on Late Night With Conan O’Brien in 2003 in support of the initial It Still Moves release. After watching the barefooted, headbanging mass of hair playing a flying V guitar, I was immediately drawn to frontman Jim James. At the conclusion of the immensely energetic performance, I shared the host’s reaction – “Wow, that was great, I am buying that record” – and the soon after did just that.

The band recently shared official video footage of their “One Big Holiday” performance on the now defunct NBC late night talk show. Watch them wow Conan followed by a handful of additional clips of past guests spots the band has made on television.

This video comes from the band’s extended Live On Letterman taping held on October 12, 2010 at the Ed Sullivan Theater in New York City. The performance coincided with an appearance as musical guests on The Late Show With David Letterman and included the It Still Moves track “Golden” which can be viewed here:

The group taped an episode of VH1 Storytellers on February 24, 2011 prior to the release of their album Circuital. Below is their rendition of that record’s title track from Metropolis Studios in New York City as it appeared on the long-running concert program:

CBS This Morning profiled My Morning Jacket in June 2013. The current lineup of MMJ – James, drummer Patrick Hallahan, guitarist Carl Broemel, keyboardist Bo Koster and bassist Tom Blankenship – appears in the segment, with James and Hallahan returning to their hometown of Louisville. James also plays a little bit of “Wonderful (The Way I Feel)” and there are a few clips of live shows interspersed in the video you can see below:

Last year leading up to the release of their most recent LP The Waterfall, My Morning Jacket played the live debut of the album track “Compound Fracture” on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. The band also taped a segment for the show’s How I Wrote That Song web series in which they discussed to composition of “Compound Fracture.” Footage of their performance has been taken down, but see them chat about song in the clip that follows:
