One Big Holiday :: 02.05.17 :: Hard Rock Hotel :: Riviera Maya, Mexico

The 2017 installment of My Morning Jacket‘s One Big Holiday destination event continued on Sunday at the Hard Rock Hotel & Resort in Riviera Maya, Mexico. Sunday was the first full day of the event and featured a slew of activities including a Mexican cooking class, “Margarita Madness” and a Super Bowl viewing party as well as performances from DJRG, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, My Morning Jacket and a Patrick Hallahan & David Givan DJ Party. Due to the Super Bowl extending into overtime, both Preservation Hall Jazz Band’s and My Morning Jacket’s sets were pushed back to allow attendees to watch the conclusion of the game.

My Morning Jacket’s second of three OBH ’17 performances was filled with all the hallmarks that make the band’s sets at the event so special: guest spots, rarities and debut covers. The first big surprise came early on when Pres Hall joined MMJ for a take on Chuck Berry’s “You Never Can Tell,” a song last played by the group at the first One Big Holiday in 2014. Then, the ladies of Lucius came out to assist My Morning Jacket and Pres Hall on the debut cover of Ray Charles’ (via Nappy Brown) “The Night Time (Is The Right Time).” Later in the set Lucius’s Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig returned for a rare cover of Pink Floyd’s “Mother” as well as “Wonderful (The Way I Feel).” Another standout moment took place a few songs later, when Preservation Hall Jazz Band added to MMJ’s second ever version of “Rebel Rebel” by David Bowie. The encore was a wild affair featuring the Lucius ladies on “Wordless Chorus” and “Holdin’ On To Black Metal” followed by Pres Hall assisting on Prince’s “Sign O’ The Times” and the MMJ original “Highly Suspicious.” After a guest-less “Gideon,” My Morning Jacket and a slew of guests ended the Main Stage action with a debut cover of “All You Need Is Love” by The Beatles. Revelers kept the music going themselves with an impromptu “Give Peace A Chance” as the set ended.
