If it feels like it’s been years since the members of The National have been talking up a Grateful Dead album that is because it has been nearly five years since word first came out. According to a new Stereogum feature on The National, the band’s GD tribute “will likely see release early in 2016.”
Stereogum has revealed a number of the indie acts who recorded contributions to the as-of-yet-untitled Grateful Dead tribute album curated by The National and they include The War On Drugs (“Touch Of Grey”), The Walkmen (“Ripple”), Marijuana Death Squad (“Truckin'”), Tunde Adebimpe of TV On The Radio (“Playing In The Band”), Unknown Mortal Orchestra (“Shakedown Street”), Kurt Vile (“Box Of Rain”), Daniel Rossen of Grizzly Bear (“Terrapin Station”) and Matthew Houck aka Phosphorescent (“Standing On The Moon”). Additional performers mentioned are Ira Kaplan of Yo La Tengo, Lee Ranaldo of Sonic Youth, Stephen Malkmus of Pavement and Dinosaur Jr.’s J. Mascis.
The National recorded “Peggy-O” for the compilation and have started covering the song live. “Many of the songs were recorded in a church in Woodstock, and many were recorded by a sort of house band assembled for the purpose of backing up singers who might not know the Dead as well, or whose own bands might not have been available,” as per Stereogum. With over 70 contributions to the tribute, you can expect a bevy of material to be included within. We look forward to the official announcement.
