Bay Area ensemble Moonalice commemorates today’s stoner holiday of 4/20 by releasing a cover of Asleep at the Wheel cult classic “Am I High?” Asleep At The Wheel co-founder and vocalist Ray Benson contributed to Moonalice’s version of the song he wrote with Chris O’Connell and Peter Sheridan.

“Aim I High?” was originally released by Asleep On The Wheel on their fifth studio album, 1977’s The Wheel. Benson sings the bridge on the Moonalice take and harmonizes with the T Sisters. “I met a few of the Moonalice folks backstage at Hardly Strictly in San Francisco and they told me about recording it and the concept,” Ray Benson explained. “I lit a joint and said sure I’d love to sing on it!”

“From its very first show in 2007, at a concert in support of medical usage, Moonalice has promoted the end of criminalization of cannabis and the civil rights abuses that stemmed from it,” noted Moonalice band leader Roger McNamee. “Our annual Gathering of the Tribe on April 20 combines music, liquid lights, and poster art in celebration of a plant that brings joy and relief to millions.” This year’s Gathering of the Tribe takes place this evening at San Francisco’s The Chapel. A free livestream can be viewed starting at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT through Moonalice.com.

Moonalice’s “Am I High?” cover arrived with a video starring longtime Grateful Dead crew member Steve Parish. Watch the hazy visual below:
