The Joy Theater in New Orleans hosted an impressive double bill on Saturday night featuring funk supergroup Monsters Of Funk as well as Colorado funk revivalists The Motet. An audience recording of the Monsters Of Funk set has surfaced for our listening enjoyment.
Monsters Of Funk features Meters guitarist Leo Nocentelli joined by Dead & Company bassist Oteil Burbridge, Dumpstaphunk keyboardist Ivan Neville and legendary drummer Bernard Purdie The quartet was joined by The Dirty Dozen Brass Band horns for a portion of their set. Included within are takes on The Meters’ “Fire On You Bayou,” “Hey Pocky Way,” “Cissy Strut” and more such as a take on War’s “Cisco Kid,” King Floyd’s “Groove Me,” Marvin Gaye’s “Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)” and The Whispers’ “Rock Steady.” For their encore, Monsters Of Funk and the DDBB horns tackled the Dirty Dozen Brass Band classic “My Feet Can’t Fail Me Now.”
