moe.‘s newest member, keyboardist Nate Wilson, had a turn in the spotlight at the band’s winter tour closer on Saturday night in Atlanta. Wilson led the group on the moe. debut of his original song “Yellow Tigers” towards the end of the first set at Variety Playhouse.

“Yellow Tigers” was initially performed by Wilson’s Ghosts of Jupiter ensemble. The song has also been a staple for moe. side project BlueStar Radiation. On Saturday, moe. unveiled an expansive version of the tune featuring dueling guitar work from Chuck Garvey and Al Schnier. Wilson, Garvey, Schnier, bassist Rob Derhak, percussionist Jim Loughlin and drummer Vinnie Amico jammed “Yellow Tigers” into “Moth” to bring the opening frame to a close in Atlanta.

The sextet kicked off the night with a standalone “Stranger Than Fiction.” Schnier then fronted a lively “Understand” that gave way to “Downward Facing Dog.” Next came the improvisational centerpiece of the set, a 19-minute “Lazarus” that preceded moe.’s first “Yellow Tigers.”

moe. went with Schnier’s “Threw It All Away” to get Saturday’s second set underway. The next 45 minutes were devoted to a pairing of “Faker” and “Meat.” Loughlin’s “Jazz Cigarette” instrumental followed before moe. linked “Seat Of My Pants” with an adventurous “Rebubula” to conclude the second set. The band returned to wrap up the night and tour with an encore consisting of their cover of the Grateful Dead’s “West L.A. Fadeaway” and Tin Cans And Car Tires ballad “Letter Home.”
