moe. & Umphreys McGee Welcome Guests At Summer Camp

The 15th annual Summer Camp Music Festival continued on Saturday at Three Sisters Park in Chillicothe, Illinois; where each of the event’s usual headliners –moe. and Umphrey’s McGee -were joined by an old friend for a guest spot.

moe. played a pair of sets on the Moonshine Stage. The band worked “St. Augustine” within “32 Things” to off their first set of the day. Al Schnier and Co.’s second set of Saturday began with a cover of Focus’s one-hit wonder, instrumental “Hocus Pocus” complete with yodeling and screaming from guitarist Chuck Garvey. Later in the set keyboardist Marco Benevento, who was at Summer Camp with Joe Russo’s Almost Dead, lent a hand on a well-jammed “Meat.”

Umphrey’s McGee began the day with a set for VIPs at Three Sisters Church. The sextet played fan-favorite “Front Porch” and included bust outs of “Q*Bert” (last played December 30, 2013) and “Visions” (last played May 25, 2014) into their performance. Next up for UM were a pair of sets on the Sunshine Stage. Early in the first set, the band was joined by theNEWDEAL keyboardist Jamie Shields on “Higgins.” Shields is a member of ’80s tribute act Omega Moos with Umphrey’s guitarist Brendan Bayliss, bassist Ryan Stasik and drummer Kris Myers. The first set also saw UM break up “Pay The Snucka” into its first section towards the beginning and parts two and three to close the opening stanza. Set Two included a number of jam vehicles such as “Wappy Sprayberry” and “Bright Lights, Big City” as well as a cover of “Regulate” delivered in part by percussionist Andy Farag. Umphrey’s said farewell to Summer Camp ’15 with a “Glory” > “Divisions” > “A Love Supreme” > “Divisions” encore.

Umphrey’s now heads to CounterPoint, while Summer Camp concludes today with performances from Widespread Panic, moe. with Bruce Hornsby and many others.
