This past weekend, moe. performed a total of six sets at the Summer Camp Music Festival at Three Sisters Park in Chillicothe, Illinois. The five-piece had a number of surprises in store that they interspersed throughout their Summer Camp sets.

moe. kicked off a Friday afternoon set on the Moonshine Stage with a cover of Pink Floyd’s “Breathe.” The band had last played the Dark Side Of The Moon gem on August 12, 2016 during a Pink Floyd tribute at the Peach Music Festival. Out of “Breathe” came the instrumental “Defrost,” which led into the old school “Akimbo” and the recently debuted “Who You Calling Scared.” moe.’s opening frame of the festival also featured a lengthy “Puebla” paired with “Skrunk” and “Down Boy.” The quintet then worked “Haze” into “Wormwood” and followed “Deep This Time” with “Downward Facing Dog.” Friday’s “Downward Facing Dog” was cut short after only two minutes due to the threat of lightning.

The veteran jam act played a late night set in the Red Barn on Friday night in which the band members dressed as animals. moe. started the set with “meat.” and didn’t have a pre-planned setlist other than knowing they would end with the final section of “meat.” Band members took turns leading into different songs over the course of the 70-minute performance including “Tubing The River Styx,” “The Pit,” “Threw It All Away” and “Time Ed.” The “Time Ed” that gave way to the end of “meat.” expanded beyond the 20-minute mark and was highlighted by solos from Vinnie Amico and Jim Loughlin.

On Saturday, bassist Rob Derhak led his mates through “Billy Goat” to kick off the group’s first of two sets on the Moonshine Stage. The band then completed a spot-on segue into “Kids.” Next came Al Schnier’s “ATL,” which was debuted at Summer Camp in 2012. moe. then welcomed percussionist Mike Dillon to add to “Montego” before concluding the frame with a near 30-minute “Rebubula” > “Water” > “Rebubula” segment.

moe. pulled “Battle Without Honor Or Humanity” from the Kill Bill Vol. 1 soundtrack to begin their second set on Saturday. Guitarist Chuck Garvey then led the band’s first cover of Pink Floyd’s “Time” since March 30, 2017. “Time” gave way to moe.’s first ever “Breathe Reprise.” The Buffalo-birthed band then worked “Plane Crash” into the beloved “Buster.” moe. continued on with the first of two composed instrumental sections that may form the basis for new songs according to a note on the group’s Facebook page. They used the instrumental as a launching pad for “Silver Sun.” Garvey’s “New Hope For The New Year” led into the second composed section, which in turn gave way to “Prestige Worldwide” before moe. finally finished “Plane Crash.” For the encore, Loughlin handled lead vocals on a debut cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song.”

The quintet ended their time at the festival with two Moonshine Stage sets on Sunday. moe. opened with the familiar pairing of “Seat Of My Pants” and “Sensory Deprivation Bank.” Then, Derhak sang lead on Led Zeppelin’s “Hey Hey What Can I Do,” which the group unveiled at a Led Zeppelin tribute held at New York City’s Carnegie Hall back in March. Rob was also in the spotlight to start a 45-minute sequence of “Don’t Fuck With Flo” > “Lazarus” > “Moth” to conclude Sunday’s first set.

Amico and Loughlin performed a “Drums” duet to begin moe.’s final set of the weekend. “Brent Black” emerged out of “Drums” and was followed by a run of “Bullet” > “Kyle’s Song” > “LL3.” A standalone “George” came next before moe. worked Garvey’s “Four” into the end of “Brent Black.” The sextet then said farewell with an encore of “New York City” and “Wind It Up.”
