moe. Honors Butch Trucks With Allman Brothers Band Cover In St. Petersburg

By Scott Bernstein Jan 27, 2017 12:35 pm PST

Last night moe. returned to the stage for a post-Jam Cruise performance at Jannus Live in St. Petersburg, Florida. The evening came to a close with a tribute to Butch Trucks, The Allman Brothers Band drummer who tragically died on Tuesday.

moe. kicked off their first of two sets with a well-jammed “Faker” > “Bullet” > “Kyle’s Song” sequence. The improv-heavy opening stanza came to a close with “Captain America” > “Mexico.” After a five-song first set, moe. went a similar route in delivering a six-song second set. The band focused on oldies throughout the night as “Wormwood” and “Not Coming Down” were the newest tunes performed and both are 14 years old. Thursday’s closing stanza included takes on “Seat Of My Pants,” the aforementioned “Wormwood” and “Not Coming Down” as well as “Water,” “Bring You Down” and “Plane Crash.”

When moe. returned for the encore bassist Rob Derhak told the story of the night he disappointed Butch with his bass work on “Whipping Post” during a rehearsal for a benefit. Derhak recalled how he worked hard to get the song down for the actual show (January 22, 2010 in New York City) the next night. With that moe. lit into their first cover of “Southbound” since 2005.
