Lamb Lies Down At Fillmore: moe. Premieres Genesis Cover In San Francisco

On Saturday, moe. concluded the West Coast portion of their winter tour with a concert at The Fillmore in San Francisco. The band fit their first ever performance of Genesis' “The Carpet Crawlers” into the evening’s second set.

moe.’s “Carpet Crawlers” was the penultimate song of their second set at The Fillmore. Keyboardist Nate Wilson handled lead vocals on the cover debut, which followed a performance of Yes’ “Würm” to complete a double dose of prog-rock classics. “Würm” hadn’t been played by moe. since October 21, 2023 — a span of 74 shows.

Genesis originally released “The Carpet Crawlers” on their iconic 1974 concept album The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway. Peter Gabriel wrote the lyrics to the song from which bandmates Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks created its chord sequence. The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway was the last Genesis album to feature Gabriel before his departure from the band.

moe. kicked off their night at The Fillmore with the old-school sequence of “Not Coming Down > “Wormwood” > “In Stride.” The sextet then played “In Stride” and “Beautiful Mess” from their recently released studio album Circle Of Giants. The oft-paired “Kyle’s Song” and “Kids” followed before guitarist Al Schnier guided the band through The Band’s “Ophelia” to end the first set.

The Chuck Garvey-penned “New Hope For The New Year” opened the second set and bled into “Chromatic Nightmare,” which showcased percussionist Jim Loughlin. moe. looked back to Circle Of Giants for the ensuing “Don’tcha Know” ahead of the aforementioned covers of “Würm” and “The Carpet Crawlers.” Bassist Rob Derhak then fronted a set-closing “Plane Crash.”

moe. delivered the oldie “Mexico” to start their encore. The six-piece said farewell with a Nate Wilson-sung take on Steely Dan’s “Do It Again.”
