Full Show Audio: moe. Continues To Debut New Material At 1st Of 2 In Maine
After a weekend off moe. continued their triumphant return to the road on Friday night, kicking off a two-night stand at the State Theatre in Portland, Maine. The jam scene stalwarts marked their return to the Pine Tree State for the first time since June of 2016 with a two-set show that once again saw them roll out new material and welcome a friend to sit-in with them on a Rolling Stones cover.
The Buffalo-based band, who hosted back-to-back New Year’s runs at the historic 1,600-plus capacity venue in 2011 and 2012, got their night underway with the lengthy jam-filled opening run that saw them string together “Bring It Back Home” > “Water” > “Bullet.” moe. continued the trend they started at The Capitol Theatre by offering up their debut take another new original: “Who You Calling Scared.” The Chuck Garvey-sung tune was the fifth new song that the band has shared in three shows. The five-piece act next welcomed pedal steel player Bill Waldron to the stage. Jambands.com reports that it was at Waldron’s barn where the band rehearsed prior to their comeback. The augmented ensemble served up their take on The Rolling Stones’ “Dead Flowers,” playing the country-infused track from Sticky Fingers for just the tenth time ever. “Mar-DeMa” from 2014’s No Guts, No Glory, “Lazarus” and “The Road” brought moe.’s first frame to a close.
The quintet got their jam-heavy second set rolling by mixing and matching tunes from the 1990’s with one from the late aughts. “Big World” from 1998’s Tin Cans & Car Tires segued into “Ricky Marten,” which was first played in 2009, and then led into one of their oldest songs, “Time Ed,” which was debuted all the way back in 1993. The band finished off Friday’s second set in Portland with a run of “Puebla,” a must-hear half hour take on “Four” and “Head.” The night came to a close with the fan-favorite cover of Blue Oyster Cult’s “Godzilla,” from the Long Island-based hard rock band’s 1977 release Spectres.
