moe. Busts Out ‘The Other One’ & Welcomes Ryan Montbleau At Saranac Brewery

On Friday night moe. began a two-night stand at the Saranac Brewery in Utica, New York. Friday’s show in bassist Rob Derhak’s hometown featured a particularly old school first set including a collaboration with the opening act and a well-jammed second set containing the return of a Grateful Dead cover to the moe. stage.

moe. opened with the dream sequence of “Timmy Tucker” > “Threw It All Away” > “Timmy Tucker.” Just the second 2016 rendition of “Don’t Fuck With Flo,” one of the oldest moe. songs still played, came next. “Flo” led into the rare instrumental “CalifornIA” which in turn gave way to a cover of David Bowie’s “Fame.” Singer-songwriter Ryan Montbleau kicked off the evening with a set featuring the latest lineup of his self-titled band. Montbleau and his band mates Kit Holliday and Lydia Harrell all came out to help moe. with vocals on the set-closing “Bodhisattva” (Steely Dan).

The second set started with a lengthy “Water” > “Hector’s Pillow” > “Bring You Down” sequence. It was during the “Silver Sun” that followed where moe. grabbed the audience’s attention by throwing a cover of the Grateful Dead’s “The Other One” within. Last night’s “Other One” was moe.’s first since January 24, 2015 and just the sixth since 2009. After “Mar-DeMa” and “Y.O.Y.” the second set came to a close with an expansive “Plane Crash” featuring Derhak playing from a seated position. The upstate natives came back to end the night with a “Sensory Deprivation Bank” encore. moe. returns to Saranac Brewery on Saturday night.
