Mitski returns with her eighth studio album, Nothing’s About To Happen To Me, which arrives February 27 on Dead Oceans. The emotionally fearless rocker previewed the 11-song collection by sharing the lead single, “Where’s My Phone?,” alongside a Noel Paul-directed video.
The singer-songwriter wrote and sang all of the songs featured on the follow-up to her 2023 LP, The Land Is Inhospitable And So Are We. Mitski tapped The Land touring band to provide live instrumentation and recruited an orchestra to give a symphonic feel to the tracks.
“Nothing’s About To Happen To Me finds Mitski immersing herself in a rich narrative whose main character is a reclusive woman in an unkempt house. Outside of her home, she is a deviant; inside of her home, she is free,” according to press materials heralding the album’s forthcoming release.
Patrick Hyland produced and engineered the record, which was mastered by Bob Weston. The orchestra laid down arrangements created and conducted by Drew Erickson at Sunset Sound and TTG Studios.
Out today is “Where’s My Phone?,” a rocking single laced with fuzz. Noel Paul’s video for the track draws from the Shirley Jackson novel, We Have Always Lived In The Castle. The playful, primitive-filmmaking fever dream casts Mitski as a paranoid guardian fending off her sister from increasingly absurd human intruders inside a gothic house. The chaos builds through a cascade of menacing and friendly interlopers alike, painting a wild psychological tapestry of total pandemonium.
