Bassist Mike Gordon and his band continued a lengthy tour on Wednesday at Cincinnati’s 20th Century Theatre. The five-piece was joined by a horn section consisting of local musicians for three songs to end the first set.
Gordon, guitarist Scott Murawski, drummer John Kimock, keyboardist Robert Walter and percussionist Craig Myers opened last night’s first set with “Pendulum.” Soon thereafter, the quintet showed off their cover of Rancid’s “Ruby Soho” ahead of a rendition of “Meat” from Mike’s time with Phish. A horn section consisting of trumpeter Mike “Mad Dog” Mavridoglou, saxophonist Ben Walkenhauer, trombonist Dominic Marino and trumpeter Eric Lechliter then emerged for the trio of songs to end the first set.
Mike’s band and the horn section teamed for “Victim,” “Steps” and “Victim 3D.” All three songs come off Gordon’s recently released OGOGO studio album. Lechliter, Mavridoglou and Marino are members of local favorites Cincy Brass. Mad Dog is also known for his time in Ohio jam act Ray’s Music Exchange and leading the Mad Dog and his Filthy Little Secret horns at a number of past Umphrey’s McGee New Year’s Eve shows.
Mike Gordon’s second set in Cincinnati opened with the original “Check Your Pepper” and continued with “Ether” off 2014’s Overstep. Gordon and his ensemble worked covers of Fiona Apple’s “Sleep To Dream” and Talking Heads’ “Cities” into the closing stanza as well as OGOGO’s “Marissa,” Myers’ “Angatta” and Overstep’s “Tiny Little World.” The group ended the evening with a “Let’s Go” encore.
