Grateful For Jerry: Mike Gordon Plays Dead With Jake’s Leg In St. Louis

Mike Gordon stuck around in St. Louis on Thursday to celebrate Jerry Garcia‘s birthday, one day after Phish completed a two-night stand at Chaifetz Arena. The bassist joined Jake’s Leg — who bill themselves as “the longest running Grateful Dead tribute in the United States” — on a three-song sequence at St. Louis’ Broadway Oyster Bar.

Jake’s Leg has been performing the music of the Grateful Dead for the past 48 years. The band weaved Jerry Garcia Band live favorites and gems from the Dead repertoire over the course of two sets last night.

Mike Gordon’s collaboration with Jake’s Leg came late in the second set. Jake’s Leg initially brought out the bassist for an expansive “Bird Song.”

“Bird Song” faded into the disco-tinged “Shakedown Street.” Jake’s Leg and the bassist covered “The Wheel” within “Shakedown Street” to complete a run of three Grateful Dead classics with Mike Gordon.
