Mike Gordon Guests With Dumpstaphunk At Cervantes’ In Denver

By Scott Bernstein Sep 2, 2016 6:52 am PDT

Phish bassist Mike Gordon started his Dick’s weekend early by sitting-in with New Orleans funk maestros Dumpstaphunk on Thursday night. Gordon stopped by Cervantes’ to lead Ivan Neville & Co. on a cover of “Funky Bitch.”

“Funky Bitch,” a Son Seals’ song, has been a staple of the Phish repertoire dating back to the band’s earliest days. Thursday night was the first time Dumpstaphunk is known to have covered “Funky Bitch.” In addition to Mike’s performances of the Son Seals classic with Phish, he’s also covered the song with his eponymous band and also played it with Phil Lesh & Friends at the Big Bass Bash earlier this summer as well as with Phish cover band Stash in 1997. Reports also say the bassist added to Dumpstaphunk’s cover of DNCE’s “Cake By The Ocean.” Gordon pulled off a similar Dick’smas Eve feat back in 2014, when he joined Dumpstaphunk at the same venue.
