See Mikaela Davis Let ‘And Southern Star’ Band & Songs Shine Live At KEXP
The harpist/singer-songwriter brought her band to Seattle’s KEXP on August 6 for a four-song session and interview.
Mikaela Davis and Southern Star visited the studios of Seattle-based radio station KEXP last month to perform a session focused on songs from And Southern Star just two days after the album was released. KEXP shared video of the four-song set which can be viewed below.
The harpist/singer-songwriter and her band were in Seattle for a gig on August 5 at Nectar Lounge and swung by the KEXP studios the next afternoon. Davis, guitarist/saxophonist Cian McCarthy, bassist Shane McCarthy, drummer/percussionist Alex Coté and pedal steel/lap steel guitarist Kurt Johnson played three And Southern Star cuts as well as “Pure Divine Love” from the Rochester native’s full-length debut album Delivery (2018). Mikaela Davis then spoke with host DJ Miss Ashley about her musical evolution, recording And Southern Star, what she learned from performing with Bob Weir and additional topics.
Mikaela Davis And Southern Star started the session the same way their new album begins with “Cinderella.” The quintet then showed off their knack for impressive improvisation by delivering a 15-minute version of And Southern Star standout “Leave It Alone.” Davis revealed it was jamming with Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros for the first time at a 2018 concert in Syracuse where she learned to stretch out and solo.
The session continued with the groovy and psychedelic “Pure Divine Love.” Mikaela Davis And Southern Star went back to their new album to draw the musical portion of the visit to a close by performing the lilting ballad “Saturday Morning.”
