The inaugural Unbroken Train three-day event began on Thursday night at Terrapin Crossroads in San Rafael, California with a performance from Twiddle frontman Mihali in the venue’s Grate Room. Mihali was joined by guests throughout the two-set performance including members of his band, Grahame Lesh, Phil Lesh and Elliott Peck.
Mihali opened with an as-of-yet untitled song he recently debuted that includes the lyrics “Now breathe and let go, relax and go slow, let your mind untangle.” Savoulidis then performed a solo rendition of the Twiddle oldie “Bronze Soul” before welcoming bassist Zdenek Gubb for Plump single “Every Soul.” The parade of guests continued soon thereafter when Grahame and Elliott emerged for a cover of John Prine’s “Angel From Montgomery.”

Grahame and Elliott, who take the Grate Room stage on Friday for a Midnight North & Frends performance, also added to a take on Tom Petty’s “You Don’t Know How It Feels.” Phil Lesh then joined in for the Midnight North original “Greene County.” The quartet also plucked “Scarlet Begonias” from the Grateful Dead repertoire. Elliott departed and Twiddle keyboardist Ryan Dempsey emerged a rendition of Twiddle’s “White Light” before Dempsey left the stage and Peck returned for a “Friend Of The Devil” set closer.
Mihali and Phil took the stage to start the second set with Bob Dylan’s “All Along The Watchtower.” Next, the pair were aided by Ryan Dempsey and Grahame Lesh for a stripped-down rendition of the beloved Twiddle favorite “Subconscious Prelude.” Savoulidis then cleared the stage for a solo cover of “Hurt” by Nine Inch Nails. The Vermont native debuted “River Drift” last year and it has since been a staple of his one-man performances. Last night’s version offered a twist as Dempsey joined in. The keyboardist known as “Norb” also added to an emotional cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.”

Thursday’s second set concluded with a solo cover of Sublime’s “Caress Me Down,” another untitled new song and Savoulidis’ “Fading State.” Mihali then returned to the stage to end the evening with a loop-heavy version of Counting Crows’ “Round Here.” Unbroken Train continues on Friday with Midnight North & Frends in the Grate Room and concludes on Saturday with performances from Twiddle and Phil Lesh & The Terrapin Family Band at the venue’s outdoor Beach Park space.
