Metallica Talks Phish Baker’s Dozen Residency In Tuning Room At Tour Finale

Legendary metal act Metallica not only webcast their tour finale from Edmonton on Wednesday night, but they also shared footage from their “Tuning Room” jam session. The members of the band ran through a few of their songs ahead of the tour closer and they also talked about a handful of topics including Phish’s Baker’s Dozen residency at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
Bassist Robert Trujillo started the conversation by bringing up an improv-heavy version of “One” the band played the previous show. Guitarist Kirk Hammett responded, “We were Phish for like 30 seconds.” James Hetfield added, “30 second acid trip!” Drummer Lars Ulrich took the opportunity to talk to his band mates about Phish’s 13-show, repeat-free Baker’s Dozen run.
Ulrich informed his mates the band played 13 concerts at MSG without repeating a single song. Hammett queried with incredulity, “I wonder how many songs they have in their catalog?” At which point Lars explained, “From what I read there were a lot of covers” and Kirk weighed in on the Phish tradition of covering entire albums. James then joked, “Only 13 shows? Whatever!” before adding “that would be a nightmare [for us] wouldn’t it?” Hammett said “anything more than two…” in regards to Metallica’s lack of ability/interest in doing the same.
