Metallica hosted their third Helping Hands benefit concert on Friday at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. St. Vincent was among the special guests, accompanying the metal band on their classic “Nothing Else Matters.”
The evening began with Metallica playing an acoustic set that saw the group premiere covers of “Borderline” by Thin Lizzy and “It’s Killing Me” by UFO. Frequent collaborator Avi Vinocur of Goodnight, Texas played guitar and mandolin at various points throughout the opening set which also featured “Blackened,” “The Unforgiven” and a cover of “Whiskey in the Jar.”
St. Vincent (guitarist Annie Clark) emerged during the penultimate song of the electric second set, trading riffs with Metallica guitarists Kirk Hammett and frontman James Hetfield. Clark helped Hetfield sing the song from Metallica’s 1992 self-titled album.
The electric second set saw Vinocur return for “All Within My Hands.” The electric portion also featured “Lux Æterna,” the recently released lead single off the band’s upcoming studio album, 72 Seasons.
