The first ever MEMPHO Music Festival is slated for October 6 – 7 at Shelby Farms Park in Memphis. A pair of intriguing listings on the initial lineup were Booker T. Presents: A Stax Revue and Steve Cropper & Friends. Organizers recently shared more details of the back-to-back sets slated for October 7.
The Stax Revue will see the legendary Booker T. front a ten-piece big band with three lead vocalists, a three-piece horn section and Booker’s usual rhythm section. Cropper, one of the world’s greatest living guitarists, has put together an impressive and eclectic group of musicians for his set. Dave Mason (Traffic), Oteil Burbridge (Allman Brothers, Dead & Company), John Popper (Blues Traveler), Eddie Floyd (wrote “Knock on Wood” with Cropper), as well as legendary keyboardist Lester Snell (Isaac Hayes), drummer Steve Potts, trombonist Victor Sawyer, and tenor sax player Jim Spake will join Cropper for the Steve Cropper & Friends set at MEMPHO.
“Being honored anywhere is a great thing but, being honored in Memphis is very special,” said Cropper. “So many STAX alumni will be there to enjoy it so it will make it even more memorable.” The MEMPHO 2017 lineup also features Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit, Cage The Elephant and Anderson .Paak & The Free Nationals. Widespread Panic will be represented by bassist Dave Schools with Hard Working Americans and keyboardist John “Jojo” Hermann with his Jojo’s Slim Wednesday project. Other acts confirmed for MEMPHO ’17 include Robert Randolph & The Family Band, Bishop Briggs, Southern Avenue, The Weeks and Dan Luke & The Rad.
