Gov’t Mule closed out their Spring Tour with a show at the Saenger Theatre in New Orleans Friday night. Frontman Warren Haynes once again welcomed a slew of guests to join the band during the two-set performance.
To start the show Mule had the help of The Levee Horns on the opening songs of the set, “John The Revelator,” “Stage Fright” and “Into The Mystic,” as well as “Down & Out In New York City” which also saw Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers drummer Steve Ferrone replace Matt Abts behind the kit. Toward the end of the set, harmonica player Smoky Greenwell, Soulive guitarist Eric Krasno and keyboardist Neal Evans took the stage and The Heartbreakers bassist Ron Blair replaced Jorgen Carlsson for a rendition of “The Spider & The Fly.”
Greenwell returned three songs into the second set, with guitarist Alvin Youngblood Hart also guesting on “Good Morning Little Schoolgirl” and “The Hunter.” Mule’s set progressed with the band bridging “Eternity’s Breath” and “No Quarter” with a jam on “St. Stephen” and it closed with “Blind Man In The Dark.” The encore kicked off with an Abts drum solo, followed by a sequence of “Rocking In The Free World” > “Machine Gun” > “When The Music’s Over” > “Machine Gun” > “Rocking In The Free World.”
