Esteemed artist Mavis Staples appeared on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert on Monday. Mavis performed “Human Mind” set for her new album, Sad and Beautiful World, due out on Friday (November 7) via ANTI- Records.
Produced by Brad Cook, Sad and Beautiful World features a mix of originals and covers. In August, Staples previewed the record with a take on Kevin Morby‘s “Beautiful Strangers.” The singer’s latest Sad and Beautiful World single, “Human Mind,” was written by Hozier and Allison Russell with Mavis in mind.
Upon hearing a line from the song referencing Mavis and her family’s involvement in the civil rights movement of the 1960s (“I am the last, daddy, the last of us”) made Mavis cry, Allison Russell shared:
“Mavis is the transcendent force of love embodied,” Russell said. “There is no higher honor than one of my biggest heroes being moved by words I wrote.”
