Matthew E. White & Lonnie Holley Announce New Album ‘Broken Mirror: A Selfie Reflection’ & Share Single
Matthew E. White and Lonnie Holley announced a new collaborative album, Broken Mirror: A Selfie Reflection, due out on April 9 through Spacebomb/Jagjaguwar. The duo also shared the lead single, “This Here Jungle of Moderness/Composition 14.”
Composer and arranger Matthew E. White began the journey to what would become Broken Mirror: A Selfie Reflection when he was working on the follow up to his 2015 album Fresh Blood. White assembled a group of musicians at Richmond, Virginia’s Montrose Recording and came away with “an array of keyboards and guitars bejeweling the momentum of an interlocking four-piece rhythm section,” as per a press release. But the material didn’t quite fit the project he was working on. So White shelved the recording.
Enter renowned visual artist Lonnie Holley, who is also an accomplished musician and poet/lyricist. A longtime fixture in the southern visual art scene, Holley released his debut album, Just Before Music, in 2012 at the age of 62. While Holley, now 70, and White, 38, may seem like unlikely collaborators the duo further cemented their relationship — both artists have connections to the Birmingham, Alabama area — when White and his band backed Holley up at an April 2019 concert in Richmond. Holley later invited White to do another show in Durham, North Carolina and White showed Holley his tapes from the recording session. White immediately began riffing lyrically. “White dug into those takes and reimagined them with a dub sensibility,” the press release continued, “wrapping psychedelic textures around thick rhythms like spools of neon lace.”
The duo previewed the five-track record with “This Here Jungle of Moderness/Composition 14.” Listen to it below:
