The National’s Matt Berninger Covers Mercury Rev For ‘Colbert’

Matt Berninger of The National teamed up with pianist Steph Altman for a cover of Mercury Rev’s “Holes” on Wednesday’s The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. Berninger and Altman each performed for their homes for the at-home edition of the CBS late-night talk show.

The National frontman recorded “Holes” for his 2020 release 7-Inches for Planned Parenthood, Vol. 2: Pt. 2. Mercury Rev originally issued the song on their 1998 album, Deserter’s Songs. “Thanks Steph, thanks Stephen, see you in person soon … I Hope,” Berninger said at the end of the performance.
