The National frontman was the musical guest on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Monday. The singer-songwriter offered his song, “Bonnet Of Pins,” for the late night television performance.
“Bonnet Of Pins” appears on Matt Berninger’s recently released second solo album, Get Sunk, which arrived last Friday (May 30). To distill the material for the follow up to his debut solo LP, 2020’s Serpentine Prison, Berninger had to descend to the bottom of a metaphorical well that wasn’t without its pitfalls, as he explained.
“Our hearts are like old wells filled with pennies and worms,” Berninger said. “I can’t resist going down to the bottom of mine to see what else is there. But sometimes you can get yourself stuck.”

“Bonnet Of Pins” arrived as the lead single for Get Sunk in March. Press materials for the record described the song as highlighting “Berninger’s knack for world-building, pointing to the tiny details that make it all palpable. There’s cigarettes and styrofoam cups filled with ‘Nabokov cocktails,’ miscommunication and sorrow. It’s a reminder that grief can also be a little funny.”
