The late Tom Petty was a native son of Gainesville, Florida and though he moved to Los Angeles with Mudcrutch in 1975, he never forgot about his hometown. Petty & The Heartbreakers celebrated their 30th anniversary with a memorable concert at Gainesville’s Stephen C. O’Connell Center on Sept. 21, 2006 that remains a highlight of the band’s live output. Gainesville locals had a chance to honor Tom Petty on Saturday, as they sung along to “I Won’t Back Down” which was played over the P.A. at a football game held at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.

The University Of Florida football team was taking on LSU on Saturday when the tribute occurred at the start of the fourth quarter. In videos that have surfaced it seems as if most in the crowd of 90,000+ were singing, and in some cases screaming along, to the recording of Tom Petty’s Full Moon Fever hit. Tom Petty passed away one week ago today after suffering cardiac arrest.
