Martin Scorsese To Direct ‘Life Is A Carnival: A Musical Celebration Of Robbie Robertson’ Concert Film

The acclaimed filmmaker will direct the capture of the concert in tribute to his longtime friend and collaborator for a future film release.

Legendary filmmaker Martin Scorsese is set to direct the documentation of tomorrow’s (October 17) Life Is A Carnival: A Musical Celebration Of Robbie Robertson at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles. The concert boasts an otherworldly lineup of performers including Trey Anastasio, Bob Weir, Eric Clapton, Mavis Staples, Warren Haynes, Van Morrison and many more.

With Scorsese at the helm, the capture of Life Is A Carnival: A Musical Celebration Of Robbie Robertson is slated for a future film release. Scorsese directed the iconic 1978 concert film, The Last Waltz, documenting Robbie Robertson’s final concert with The Band at San Francisco’s Wonderland Ballroom on Thanksgiving Day 1976.

The lineup for Life Is A Carnival: A Musical Celebration Of Robbie Robertson is arguably the greatest assembly of musicians since The Last Waltz. The event recently announced the all-star house band which includes Ryan Bingham, Jamey Johnson, Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench, Don Was, John Medeski, Dave Malone, Terence Higgins, Cyril Neville, Mark Mullins & The Levee Horns.

The house band will join previously announced performers, which, along with aforementioned artists, include Eric Church, Bruce Hornsby, Jim James, Daniel Lanois, Taj Mahal, Margo Price, Robert Randolph, Nathaniel Rateliff, Allison Russell, Mavis Staples and Lucinda Williams.

Scorsese’s tribute to his longtime friend Robbie Robertson will come in the form of the concert film. Following The Last Waltz, the artists formed a friendship and working relationship. Robertson helmed the music on many Scorsese films including Raging Bull, The King of Comedy, The Color of Money, Casino, Gangs of New York, The Departed, Shutter Island, The Wolf of Wall Street, Silence, The Irishman and Killers of the Flower Moon.

The latter film was released just months after Robbie’s death on August 9, 2023. The film held a special importance for Robertson as a person with indigenous roots. Robertson earned a posthumous Oscar nomination for the Killers of the Flower Moon score.
