Marcus Mumford’s tour in support of his recently released (self-titled) solo album stopped at Nashville’s The Ryman Auditorium on Sunday night. The concert was a guest-filled production with members of Mumford & Sons, Ketch Secor of Old Crow Medicine Show, Jerry Douglas and others sitting-in, including Brandi Carlile who was given the stage for a mini-solo set.
The concert started with Mumford onstage alone performing the Mumford & Sons song “Awake My Soul.” He continued with solo offerings of the traditional “Dink’s Song (Fare Thee Well)” and the Mumford & Sons staple “The Cave.”
Mumford then turned the stage over to Carlile, who kicked off her solo set with “The Mother.” She followed with “The Joke” and “The Story.” Mumford then joined Carlile on “You and Me on the Rock.”
As he’s done throughout the tour, Mumford and his backing band performed (self-titled) in its entirety. Sarah Jarosz came out near the end of the set, augmenting “Stonecatcher.” Carlile was called back to assist with the set-closing “How.”
A Mumford & Sons reunion and mini set then commenced as Mumford’s bandmates Ted Dwane and Ben Lovett came onstage. Sunday marked the first time Mumford & Sons had performed in public since before the pandemic. The appearance was also their first as a trio, following the departure of Winston Marshall in 2021.
The Mumford & Sons segment featured “Timshel,” “I Will Wait,” and “Ditmas.” Next, dobro master Jerry Douglas and Old Crow Medicine Show fiddler Ketch Secor were summoned to the stage, along with Jarosz, for a rendition of “Lover’s Eyes.” The same collective finished off the Mumford & Sons set with “Ghosts That We Knew.”

The night ended with most of the guests onstage for The New Basement Tapes’ “Kansas City.”
