Marc Bolan & T. Rex Tribute Album Features U2, Elton John, Lucinda Williams, Father John Misty & More

An all-star tribute album, AngelHeaded Hipster: The Songs Of Marc Bolan And T. Rex, featuring U2 and Elton John, Lucinda Williams, Nick Cave, Father John Misty and many more will be released by BMG on September 4. The double album contains covers of 26 songs from Marc Bolan’s career with T. Rex and Tyrannosaurus Rex spanning 1968 to 1977.
In addition to the above, the complete list of contributors includes Marc Almond, Devendra Banhart, Børns, Helga Davis, Elysian Fields, Perry Farrell, Gavin Friday, Emily Haines, Jesse Harris, Joan Jett, Kesha, King Khan, Sean Lennon & Charlotte Kemp Muhl, Nena, Maria Mckee, John Cameron Mitchell, Gaby Moreno, Beth Orton, Peaches, Todd Rundgren and Victoria Williams with Julian Lennon. Acclaimed producer Hal Willner, who died in April from COVID-19, produced AngelHeaded Hipster.

“Hal had a unique vision of Marc Bolan’s music, and working on AngelHeaded Hipster brought him great joy,” said Rachel Fox, AngelHeaded Hipster supervising producer and frequent Willner collaborator. “Speaking for those closest to him, we will forever be heartbroken at the untimely loss of our beloved friend and irreplaceable creative engine. Hal, who referred to AngelHeaded Hipster as his ‘White Album,’ was eager for everyone to hear these beautiful songs and to start thinking about Bolan and T. Rex again. This album is a testament to Hal’s spirit.”
Additional contributions came from Donald Fagen, Mike Garson, Bill Frisell, Wayne Kramer, Van Dyke Parks and Marc Ribot. Arrangements were provided by Thomas Bartlett, Steven Bernstein, Eli Brueggemann, J.G. Thirlwell and Steve Weisberg.
Bolen was 29-years-old when he died in 1977 following a car accident in London. T. Rex was part of the 2020 class of inductees into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.
