Many Guests Join Gov’t Mule At Island Exodus First Night

Gov’t Mule commenced the 7th annual Island Exodus destination concert event last night with the first of three performances at The Jewel Paradise Cove Resort in Runaway Bay, Jamaica. True to form, Mule welcomed many guests to share the stage throughout the night and paid tribute to David Bowie as well.

From the start Gov’t Mule was joined by longtime collaborator, saxophonist Ron Holloway, beginning the show with a jam on Bob Marley’s “Exodus” that eventually segued into a debut performance of “Rebel Rebel Music” – an interpolation of the reggae staple “Rebel Music (3 O’Clock Road Block)” and Bowie’s “Rebel Rebel.” Holloway then left Mule alone for a few songs before guitarist John Scofield emerged to give a little Sco-Mule flavor to the final three songs of the first set, including “Hottentot” and the closing “Doin’ It To Death” which also saw Holloway join.

Scofield ended up sticking around for the entire five-song second set and two-song encore, while Holloway reemerged during the second song of the set and added sax the rest of the show as well. Toward the end of set two, drummer Rocky Lindsley took over for Matt Abts on “32/20” and the set closing take on the Grateful Dead’s “Sugaree” that also featured Jackie Greene sitting-in. Greene was on hand for the guest-filled encore, running through “I Believe To My Soul” > “Night Time Is The Right Time” to wrap the first night on the island.

Island Exodus continues today with more performances, including another two sets from Gov’t Mule tonight.
