Lorde dropped the deeply personal new single “Man Of The Year” along with an accompanying Grant Singer-directed video. The track opens the Kiwi singer-songwriter’s long-awaited new album, Virgin, which is set for release on June 27.
Virgin marks Lorde’s fourth studio album and first since 2021’s Solar Power. “Man On The Year” comes on the heels of the forthcoming LP’s lead single, “What Was That.”

Co-produced by Lorde and Jim-E Stack, “Man Of The Year” finds Lorde exploring themes of gender identity. The Grammy-winning artist recently discussed the topic with Rolling Stone.
Lorde told Rolling Stone about her response when pal Chappell Roan asked how she identifies. “She was like, ‘So, are you nonbinary now?’ And I was like, ‘I’m a woman except for the days when I’m a man.’ I know that’s not a very satisfying answer, but there’s a part of me that is really resistant to boxing it up,” Lorde explained.
“My gender got way more expansive when I gave my body more room,” Lorde added.
Lorde strips down in the video for “Man Of The Year” and appears with tape over her breasts. She explained to Rolling Stone that she wrote that track at home while aiming to put forward a self-identity “that was fully representative of how [her] gender felt in that moment.”
