History was made at Lizzo‘s concert on Tuesday night in Washington D.C. The pop star took a few moments during the show at Capital One Arena to play former President James Madison’s crystal flute on loan from the Library of Congress.
Lizzo tweeted that she was the first and only person to play the 200-year-old crystal flute. The instrument was gifted to Madison by Parisian Claude Laurent in 1813 according to the Library of Congress. It is thought Dolly Madison took the crystal flute with her upon fleeing the White House in 1814 ahead of British troops descending upon Washington D.C.
Representatives from the Library of Congress brought the flute to Lizzo on stage last night. “Bitch, I’m scared,” Lizzo exclaimed before playing the instrument and twerking. “It’s like crystal, it’s like playing out of wine glass,” she added and after the performance noted, “Bitch! I just twerked and played James Madison’s flute from the 1800s!” Lizzo went on to thank the Library of Congress.
The Library of Congress’ Carol Lynn Ward-Bamford tweeted at the musician a few days prior inviting her to check out “the largest flute collection in the world.” Lizzo took her up on the offer and made a private visit to the facility on Monday.
