Love Letter To The Blues: Watch Little Feat’s Blazing ‘Got My Mojo Working’ Performance From ‘Sam’s Place’

Little Feat recently released Sam’s Place, the influential rock band’s first blues-oriented album, first new LP since 2012’s Rooster Rag, first album recorded by the current lineup, and their first album featuring percussionist Sam Clayton exclusively handling lead vocals. Clayton’s singing talents are on display in the newly posted video of the Sam’s Place live recording of “Got My Mojo Working.”

Little Feat consists of longtime members Clayton, keyboardist Bill Payne, bassist Kenny Gradney, and multi-instrumentalist Fred Tackett, along with guitarist Scott Sharrard and drummer Tony Leone. The group recorded the bulk of Sam’s Place at the historic Sam Phillips Recording studio in Memphis.

Also included on the record released through Hot Tomato Productions/MRI was a live performance of the Muddy Waters’ popularized “Got My Mojo Working.” Captured during Little Feat’s concert on December 17, 2022, at the Boulder Theatre in Boulder, Colorado, joining the band for the classic blues staple was guest harmonica player Michael “The Bull” LoBue.

Billy Payne spoke to JamBase about the outstanding Boulder Theatre performance of “Got My Mojo Working,” sharing the statement below:

“It is not often you get a chance to offer a love letter to a genre, or in this case, a song. I’m not talking about a tribute to something. It is stepping up and delivering the goods at eye level. ‘Got My Mojo Working’ was a ball to record as a live track at the Boulder Theatre.

“Our manager, Brian Penix, suggested the song to us early on when we were considering material for Sam’s Place. We didn’t hesitate. Sam Clayton is the man singing it and deserves recognition for being the real deal. You cannot fake your way through the blues.

“And that applies mightily to ‘Got My Mojo Working.’ Stand up and be counted or move aside. We stood up. Join us.”
