The Infamous Stringdusters brought their Ski Dust Tour to Denver’s Mission Ballroom on Saturday. The jamgrass quintet welcomed opener Lindsay Lou and members of her band which included Fruition’s Mimi Naja for a cover the Aretha Franklin-popularized “Respect.”
The Infamous Stringdusters kicked off the concert with “Sirens” off their 2017 LP, Laws Of Gravity. A pairing of “Planets” and Harry Styles’ “As It Was” followed ahead of a standalone “Country Fool.” The quintet then delivered “Long Time Goin” from which emerged the “Respect” cover with Lindsay Lou and company.

“Respect” was written by soul legend Otis Redding, who released it as a single from his 1965 album Otis Blue/Otis Redding Sings Soul. But it was the Queen Of Soul who put out the definitive version of Redding’s tune. Bringing the song from her live repertoire into the studio, Aretha Franklin released “Respect” in early 1967.
Lindsay Lou led The Dusters through a high-octane bluegrass version of the soul classic in Denver with Fruition’s Mimi Naja among a group of backing vocalists that also included Heather Gillis and Michelle Pietrafitta. Fiddler Jeremy Garrett ripped up the instrumental bridge.
The Dusters wrapped the first frame with a coupling of “Colorado” and “Back Home Again.” The second set got underway with a single mic Trad Plus segment led by banjo player Chris Pandolfi and featuring bluegrass classics like Bill Monroe’s “Sweet Blue-Eyed Darling” and Flatt & Scruggs “Polka On The Banjo.”
The quintet returned to their jamgrass ways for the latter half of the second frame including a cover of the Grateful Dead’s “Dark Star” fit within “Tragic Life” from the band’s 2007 debut album, Fork In The Road. The Dusters wrapped the concert with the album’s title track which followed a cover of The Cure’s “Just Like Heaven.”
