Les Claypool Says Planets Wouldn’t Align For 2016 Oysterhead Reunion

Yesterday, Primus bassist Les Claypool and Ghost Of A Saber Tooth Tiger frontman Sean Lennon announced the upcoming release of a debut studio album and first-ever tour from their new project, The Claypool Lennon Delirium. A bio on the group’s new website contains interesting news about Oysterhead.
For those unfamiliar, Claypool formed Oysterhead with Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio and Police drummer Stewart Copeland in 2000. The trio first came together for a performance during the 2000 Jazz Fest in New Orleans and released their lone album and embarked on their only tour in 2001. Oysterhead’s only other performance took place at Bonnaroo in 2006 nearly ten years ago. Copeland discussed trying to get Oysterhead back together in a 2014 interview, but little has been heard since.
Apparently Les was hoping to organize an Oysterhead reunion this year, but after he was unable to do so decided to put his focus on The Claypool Lennon Delirium. “I was trying to wrangle up an Oysterhead reunion since Primus was taking a rest for 2016 but the planets just wouldn’t align for that,” Claypool said. “I don’t like sitting around, so when Sean said he didn’t have plans for this next year, we started kicking around the notion of making an old-school, psychedelic/prog record. Next thing I know, he’s staying in my guesthouse, drinking my vino and banging on my drums.”
Here’s hoping the bassist has better luck reforming the supergroup on his next attempt. In the meantime, we’re excited to see what The Claypool Lennon Delirium live shows will entail. The band kicks off their first-ever tour at The Beacham in Orlando on June 4 and brings the run to both coasts and many points in between through a September 1st visit to the 9:30 Club in Washington, D.C.
