Leftover Salmon and Daniel Donato‘s Cosmic Country joined forces to honor Jerry Garcia on Friday with a special concert at The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York. The “Workingman’s Salmon” show held during the “Daze Between” Garcia’s birthday and the anniversary of his death saw LoS bring out Donato as part of a complete performance of Workingman’s Dead.
The Grateful Dead released their Workingman’s Dead album and its studio follow-up, American Beauty in 1970. Each album focuses on Americana-style songs in contrast to the psychedelia found on previous GD records. Both Leftover Salmon and Daniel Donato are well-versed in the music of the Grateful Dead making them a nice fit to cover the eight-song album.

Daniel Donato’s Cosmic Country kicked off the concert with an hour-long set. The frame was highlighted by extended versions of “Luck Of The Draw” and “Lose Your Mind” and saw the quartet dig into the Grateful Dead’s live repertoire for a take on the traditional “Jack-A-Roe.”
Leftover Salmon took the stage next and immediately began the front-to-back Workingman’s Dead performance with “Uncle John’s Band” and “High Time.” Donato came out to join the veteran jamgrass band on “Dire Wolf” and stuck around for the rest of their set. The musicians stuck to the same sequence as found on the album with “Morning Dew” thrown in for good measure.
Daniel Donato and Leftover Salmon followed Workingman’s Dead by covering New Riders Of The Purple Sage’s “I Don’t Know You.” The guitarist was also on hand to help LoS close the set with fan-favorite originals “Aquatic Hitchhiker” and “Gulf Of Mexico.”
Leftover Salmon went it alone to wrap the night at The Cap by performing the beloved “All Night Ride” as the encore. Watch fan-shot video of the “Workingman’s Salmon” concert below:
