Leftover Salmon Hosts Guest-Filled Run In Boulder With Sam Bush, Lindsay Lou, Andy Frasco & More
The band’s children were also among the many musicians who appeared across the two shows.
Leftover Salmon welcomed a parade of guests over the course of a two-show run at the Boulder Theater in Boulder, Colorado last Friday (November 25) and Saturday (November 26) nights. Sam Bush, Lindsay Lou and Andy Frasco were among the many musicians who shared the stage with LoS during the concerts, which also saw the band bring out their children for special guest sit-ins.
During a ceremony at the onset of Friday’s performance, Leftover Salmon was inducted into the Colorado Music Hall Of Fame. Bush introduced longtime LoS manager Chuck Morris who presented the group with the prestigious honor.
Bush added fiddle and mandolin to the entire first set on Friday. Lou emerged toward the end of the set to sing Lucinda Williams’ “Lines Around Your Eyes.” LoS mandolinist Drew Emmitt was then joined onstage by his daughter, singer-songwriter Willa Emmitt who joined Lou on vocals for “Up Above My Head,” a gospel song popularized by Sister Rosetta Tharpe.
Midway through the second set, a pair of guest banjo pickers came out as LoS was joined by Billy Failing of Billy Strings’ band and Kyle Tuttle who performs with Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway. The guests made for three banjos onstage as they joined LoS’ Andy Thorn and the rest of the band on the holiday-appropriate “Turkey In The Straw.” The added banjoists stuck around for a subsequent run through Flatt & Scruggs’ “Dear Old Dixie.”
LoS guitarist Vince Herman was then joined on stage by his son Silas Herman who accompanied the band on guitar for “Fire & Brimstone.” Silas Herman switched to mandolin as the band segued into Bob Dylan’s “Simple Twist Of Fate.”
Leftover Salmon was back at it on Saturday with another show featuring a slew of special guests, including Bush sitting-in throughout. The first to emerge on night two was local eTown host Nick Forster who added guitar and vocals to the bluegrass staple “Why You Been Gone So Long.” Lindsay Lou was also back for night two, coming out to sing Little Feat’s “Sailin’ Shoes.” With Lou still onstage, Andy Frasco was brought out to lead his “Dancin’ Around My Grave.”
The second set saw the return of Silas Herman who played guitar on “Troubled Times.” Lou returned to add guitar and vocals to “The River Jordan” and “Take Me To The River.” With Lou sticking around, a cavalcade of banjos was brought out as Yonder Mountain String Band’s Dave Johnston, Kitchen Dwellers’ Torin Daniels and Kyle Tuttle joined Andy Thorn for a four-banjo version of “Clinch Mountain Backstep.”
Saturday’s encore consisted of John Hartford’s “Up on the Hill Where They Do the Boogie” with Dave Johnston and Silas Herman assisting on the weekend’s finale.
