Renowned vocalist Lee Fields will release his Daptone Records debut full-length studio album, Sentimental Fool, on October 28. The soul singer previewed the 12-song set by sharing its title track via an Andrew Anderson-directed video.

Fields is no stranger to the Brooklyn-based label as Daptone issued a string of singles in the early ’00s. In January, Daptone celebrated the return of Lee Fields to its roster by releasing a limited-edition vinyl EP dubbed Ordinary Lives. The EP consists of its title track, also put out digitally and featured on Sentimental Fool, along with four singles from Fields’ previous stint on Daptone.

Sentimental Fool was recorded with Daptone Records founder Gabriel Roth (Bosco Mann) behind the board at the producer/musician’s Penrose Recorders/Daptone West facility in Riverside, California. Gabriel Roth assembled an all-star band to back Lee Fields on the follow-up to 2019’s It Rains Love featuring Daptone family members guitarist Thomas Brenneck, bassist Benny Trokan, drummer Brian Wolfe, keyboardists Victor Axelrod and Jimmy Hill, saxophonists Neal Sugarman and Ian Hendrickson-Smith and trumpeter Dave Guy as well as other guest musicians and backing vocalists.

“I wanted to cut a different kind of record and really give Lee room to sing,” noted Gabriel Roth. “We took our time and got painfully deep into every one of these tunes, stripping them down to pure feeling – no effort spared, no empty gestures remaining. Lee might be the greatest singer alive and I don’t think he’s ever sung better than on these sessions.”

Lee Fields discussed what Roth brought to the project and going “deep” on Sentimental Fool in the following statement:

“With Gabe’s efforts I feel like this album depicts me as the full character that I am. I’m all about emotions. This album allowed me to show what I’m capable of doing. Not to say that my vocal ability goes beyond others, but I’m able to figure out the math to get the feeling you’re looking for. I’m not trying to outdo any singer, but I can interpret the feeling. I can make someone cry if I want to. It’s always the challenge of trying to make something deeper. On this record, I go deeper than I’ve ever gone.”
