ALO guitarist Lebo (Dan Lebowitz) was joined by a host of musical friends at his 50th Birthday Bash on Saturday (November 23) at Sweetwater Music Hall in Mill Valley, California. Lebo & Friends performed two sets and an encore with special guests adding to the celebration at various points of the concert.

The Lebo & Friends lineup that played Sweetwater on Saturday night saw Lebowitz accompanied by vocalist/percussionist Vicki Randle and ALO bassist Steve Adams along with keyboardist Trevor Garrod and drummer Scott Rager of Tea Leaf Green. The quintet kicked off Lebo’s 50th Birthday Bash with the solo gems “Picture Of You” and “Disappear” splitting up performances of Garrod-sung TLG staples “Give Me One More Chance” and “Earth & Sky.”

Steve Adams had a chance fronting the ensemble on the subsequent rendition of “Rare Air” from ALO’s 2023 album, Silver Saturdays. The first guests of the evening were trumpeter Cameron Washington and saxophonist Johnny Bones (California Honeydrops) who added to a sequence linking the Erik Satie composition “Gymnopedie” and the Grateful Dead classic “Eyes Of The World.” Washington and Bones stuck around for takes on “Undertow” (ALO) and Billy Preston’s 1972 hit “Will It Go Round In Circles” to close the first set. Vicki Randle handled lead vocal duties on the Billy Preston cover.

Lebo & Friends went it alone on ALO fan-favorite “I Wanna Feel It” to get the second set underway. Then, New Monsoon co-founder Jeff Miller came out on guitar for a Randle-sung cover of Talking Heads’ “Slippery People.” Next, the horns returned to add to the rare Lebo-penned number “This Is What It Sounds Like To Be Alive” before Garrod guided the core ensemble through TLG’s “One Reason.”

The next segment of the show was devoted to a “Sparrow” that encompassed a cover of “Just Like Heaven” by The Cure. It was then back to the ALO repertoire for a “Not Old Yet” featuring keyboardist Jordan Feinstein and Johnny Bones on sax. Bones was also on hand to add to a rollicking rendition of the Neil Young favorite “Cinnamon Girl” and a set-closing “The Garden III.” Lebo’s 50th Birthday Bash came to a close with Jeff Miller and Johnny Bones contributing to a cover of the Grateful Dead’s “U.S. Blues.”
