LazyLightning55 Video: Joe Russo’s Almost Dead Teams With John Mayer For ‘Althea’

One week ago today on Friday, October 13 Joe Russo’s Almost Dead welcomed guitarist John Mayer to share the stage at Brooklyn Bowl in New York City for the second year in a row. The first song Mayer contributed to was “Althea” and high-quality video captured by LazyLightning55 has surfaced.
As reported the Mayer/JRAD II summit saw the Dead & Company guitarist emerge at the end of the first set and also contribute to portions of the second set and encore. Mayer stuck to his instrument and didn’t sing at any point during the evening. “Althea” is a song with special meaning to John Mayer, as it was the tune that sent him down the Grateful Dead wormhole after he heard it on a Pandora channel in 2011. He also performed “Althea” with Bob Weir during Mayer’s short stint as guest host on CBS’s The Late Late Show before Dead & Company was put together.
JRAD jammed a bit as Joe Russo introduced Mayer and his wild footwear. The six musicians worked the improv into “Althea,” which was sung by Tom Hamilton. Mayer took a few scorching solos and also took part in some give-and-take with Scott Metzger and Hamilton. By the end of the 18-minute version the capacity-crowd gave the band and its guest multiple roars of approval.
