Lainey Wilson was the musical guest on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Wednesday. The country star performed “Somewhere Over Laredo,” appearing on the deluxe edition of Wilson’s 2024 album Whirlwind.
Whirlwind (Deluxe) arrived on August 22. “Somewhere Over Laredo” was one of five new songs that appeared on the expanded LP. Lainey Wilson detailed the song in an interview with CBS.
“I spend a lot of my time, 30,000 feet in the air, flying to the next show, the next town,” she said. “And you know, when you’re staring out the window, you get to just spend a little bit of time with yourself and reminisce and dream, talk to God, all of those things.”
Speaking with American Songwriter Wilson said of “Somewhere Over Laredo:”
“Laredo isn’t just a place — it is a feeling. It speaks to anyone who has ever looked back or remembered something and let that memory shape who they are. It also connects to all of those [small American] towns and people who are just trying to find their way home.
“If you say ‘somewhere over the rainbow’ fast 10 times, it kind of sounds like ‘somewhere over Laredo.’ That struck me as a perfect fit.”
